In Search of the Cultural Significance of Translation

「明治期以降の日本における翻訳文化を研究。「自由」の新しい概念を普及させた福澤諭吉の民主思想を世界に広めるべく彼の作品を研究、多言語出版に携わりました。映画の字幕・吹替の関係においては異文化理解の限界にも言及しています。」
“I study translation culture in post-Edo Japan. To spread the democratic ideology of Yukichi Fukuzawa—who proliferated the new concept of “freedom”—to the world, I studied his works and was involved in the publication of a multilingual edition. I also wrote about the limits of cross-cultural understanding found in the relationship between subtitling and dubbing of films.”
