Vol.1: Why Study the Mouse Brain to Understand the Human Brain? Bidirectional Translational Research in Brain Science
Kenji Tanaka
Professor, Keio University School of Medicine
Division of Brain Sciences, Institute for Advanced Medical Research
First, the distinction between basic research, which employs model organisms, and clinical research, which focuses on human subjects, will be outlined. Building on this foundation, the discussion will further explore the current consensus in brain science: how the findings from basic research contribute to our understanding of humans and how clinical research outcomes enhance our comprehension of living organisms as a whole.
Furthermore, the discussion will highlight key aspects that fundamentally differentiate brain science research from fields such as cancer/immunology research, addressing the essential elements required for the future advancement of this area of study.
