Introduction

I study and translate literature written in Basque, the indigenous language of a region called the Basque Country, which spans northern Spain and southwestern France. Basque is a minority language compared to Spanish and French and was once feared to be on the verge of extinction. However, it experienced a rapid revival from the latter half of the 20th century, along with significant development in contemporary literature written in Basque. I aim to elucidate the development process of Basque literature through the study of modern writers, particularly focusing on Bernardo Atxaga. In relation to this, I am also interested in themes such as bilingualism in multilingual regions like the Basque Country, translation (especially self-translation), and world literature.
