Introduction

I am researching the lives of common women in society from the late Ming to the late Qing period. Since there are no records left by the common women themselves, I am examining the social conventions and ethical norms related to common women as shown in court documents and official papers. In recent years, I have also become interested in marriage and child-rearing in the households of Han Chinese intellectuals during the Qing dynasty.
