Introduction
- My research interests are in intercultural communication, acculturation psychology, and intercultural education. I aim to facilitate positive intercultural contact both in Japan and abroad and to advance theoretical research by developing new ways of conceptualizing the
acculturation process and its outcomes.
- ■Social Markers and Acculturation
・Research Objective: To distill the markers considered important by Japanese undergraduates to accept immigrants in Japanese society and to test the premises of integrated threat and social identity theories by ascertaining the effects on marker endorsement of perceived immigrant threat, contribution, social status, and intergroup permeability.

・Research Objective: To examine the markers of social acceptance of immigrants from the perspectives of recipient nationals and how these markers redefine ethnic-civic citizenship in five nations.
- Title: What does it take to become “one of us?” Redefining ethnic-civic citizenship using markers of everyday nationhood, Leong Chan-Hoong, Komisarof Adam, Dandy Justine, Jasinskaja-Lahti Inga, Safdar Saba, Hanke Katja, Teng Eugene (International Journal of Intercultural Relations) 78 10-19 Sep. 2020
・Research Objective: To test the predictions of the Interactive Acculturation Model about alignments of acculturation strategies and their associations with various qualities of intercultural relations in Japanese workplace contexts.
- Title: Testing a modified Interactive Acculturation Model in Japan: American–Japanese coworker relations, Komisarof Adam (International Journal of Intercultural Relations) 33 ( 5 ) 399-418 Sep. 2009
■Quantitative Measures and Validation
・Research Objective: To develop and test a quantitative measure of acceptance in intercultural workplaces for both host nationals and migrants in Japan-based workplaces.
Title: A new framework of workplace belonging: Instrument validation and testing relationships to crucial acculturation outcomes, Komisarof Adam (Journal of International and Intercultural Communication) 15 ( 3 ) 311-332 Jul. 2022
■Workplace Acculturation
・Research Objective: To compare the quality of intercultural relations reported by Japanese and Americans in Japan-based workplaces.
- Title: Are Americans more successful at building intercultural relations than Japanese? A comparison and analysis of acculturation outcomes in Japan, Komisarof Adam (SpringerPlus) 3 ( 1 ) Dec. 2014-
■Intergroup Relations and Belonging
・Research Objective: To identify the markers considered important by Japanese to accept immigrants in Japanese society and to examine the type of intergroup conditions associated with immigrant inclusion
- Title: Constructions of Japanese national identity: Host views using a social markers of acceptance framework, Komisarof Adam, Leong Chan-Hoong, Lim Travis (International Journal of Intercultural Relations) 94 101806 May. 2023
■Intercultural Communication and COVID-19
