Introduction

Tatsuhiko Yamamoto specializes in constitutional law, with a particular focus on the relationship between cutting-edge technologies, including AI, and human rights and democracy.
He has published extensively on privacy, personal data protection, and social media and freedom of expression.
Theoretically, he is also interested in sovereignty theory, and in a world where the influence of AI and algorithms is growing, he has conducted research on whether the power of digital platform companies should be (constitutionally) regulated and whether the traditional modern nation-state system and the concept of “popular sovereignty” (digital constitutionalism) can be maintained.

■Personal Data Protection and Use
・Research Objective: To clarify the theoretical connection between privacy rights and personal data protection, and to explore how to ensure legal control over personal data by individuals amid increasingly complex data transactions.
■Social Media and Freedom of Expression
・Research Objective: In an information space dominated by the attention economy business model, provocative discourse that attracts attention (interest) such as misinformation and defamation is spreading and amplifying. In this context, we seek to redefine the freedom of expression guaranteed by the Constitution and attempt to (re)construct and design a healthy information space that also respects human dignity.
■The “Power” of Digital Platforms and Constitutional Control
・Research Objective: Against the backdrop of the accelerated development of AI and algorithms, digital platforms such as GAFAM are beginning to wield power that surpasses even that of nation states. Building on the debate surrounding “digital constitutionalism,” which argues that constitutionalist ideals such as human rights and democracy should be embedded in the digital space, this research explores the essence of platform power and examines methods for its control.
■Constitution and AI Governance
・Research Objective: Appropriate utilization of AI requires governance that takes into account human rights and democracy. This research aims to construct a new form of governance based on constitutional principles, particularly with regard to the use of AI in administrative and legislative contexts.
■Establishing a Role Model for Interdisciplinary Research and Cultivating Interdisciplinary Talent
・Research Objectives: With the advancement of AI and other technologies, the need for interdisciplinary research such as science-humanities integration has grown, but effective methodologies remain underdeveloped. Drawing on the academic exchange models of the Renaissance era, this research will explore such methodologies, develop approaches for implementing humanities research in society, and establish methods for cultivating science-humanities integration talent.
